Parenthesis is when you add extra information to a sentence using commas, brackets or dashes. Let’s move onto brackets. Brackets work in exactly the same way as commas so they surround the extra information and the sentence MUST make sense when the extra information is removed like this: My best friend (called Emma) lives next door to me. My best friend lives next door to me. The sentence still makes sense without the extra information within the brackets.
Q3. Which of these sentences use the brackets for parenthesis correctly?
Rhinos (an endangered species) mostly live in Africa.
Our friends (James and David) live across the road.
Our neighbour Mrs (Bewley forgot to put) out the bin.
Abi’s pink (dress with white flowers) was too long.
Q4. Add brackets in the correct place in this sentence, remember they need to surround the extra information: Maria and Saffah the identical twins work at the same shop.
Q5. Add brackets in the correct place in this sentence, remember they need to surround the extra information: Roald Dahl a Welsh author wrote lots of funny children’s books
Q6. Add brackets in the correct place in this sentence, remember they need to surround the extra information: The poodle a breed of dog has lots of fur.
